Slammin' Sunrise "Green" Smoothie ...

Good morning, Gnawers!  This will be a short post (and yes, I will post again tonight ... a delicious dinner recipe too ... hint: basil cream sauce).  I just wanted to give you all another "green" smoothie recipe for the weekend!  Several of you have been sending me messages asking for more smoothie recipes, so I decided to add some this weekend while I had the time (there is not a lot of that when I am rushing out the door to get to work during the week).

Soooooo, today's recipe is called the Slammin' Sunrise "Green" Smoothie.  This one is a goodie.  I will add one fun nutritional fact to this post.  So, normally, when we eat strawberries, we cut the tops off, right?  Weeeeeeell, when you make your smoothies in the VitaMix, you don't need to take them off!  The VitaMix will blend them right up.  "Why would we want to do that?" I am sure you are asking.  I'll give you three reasons:  fiber, phytonutrients, and vitamin K (according to the VitaMix Lady).  Again ... I do not work for VitaMix or have any connection to them at all ... I just love this freaking machine!  Okay ... onto the recipe!

Slammin' Sunrise "Green" Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 2-3 cups organic spinach
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1-2 cups frozen strawberries
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 2 tablespoons flaxseeds

Preparation Instructions:
  • Blend until smooth and vortex is created in center of blender (VitaMix!).
  • Pour and garnish with a fresh strawberry.
  • Serve and enjoy!!!

I am headed off to the beach to go for a little walk now.  I hope you all have happy and healthy days, and I will be back to write more tonight!  Until next time, Gnawers ... take care of you!!!

    1. Welcome! I do love this smoothie ... one of my favorites! This makes 1-2 smoothies. I actually drink the whole thing usually. But, here is a great tip. You can freeze the left overs in an ice cube tray or muffin pan, pop them out, and add them smoothies later! Or, you can simply freeze them in cups and pull them out whole when you want to take a smoothie to work or something. :) Otherwise, yes, I would probably cut the ingredients in half to make a little less. Hope that helps! Thanks for being here!

    1. Welcome, Katie! I had never heard of it before my sister introduced me to it about a year ago. It such a delicious and sneaky way to get raw greens and a ton of nutrients into your diet! I sometimes recommend that people start with less greens than I typically use, and then work up to as much as you like. I hope it works out well for you. Let me know! Thanks for being here!

    1. Hi, Missy. Glad you found the blog and happy you are here! The entire 42 ounce blender full (which can be 1-3 servings depending on how big of a smoothie you drink)has approximately 320-450 calories and 7.5 - 11.5 grams of fat (it is the higher figures if you use 2 cups of strawberries and 2 tablespoons of flaxseed). :)

    1. Hi, MaryJanes and Galoshes! So glad you are here. That is a great question about the milk. I have decided to pretty much go vegan, which means eliminating all animal products (including milk). I watched the movie "Forks Over Knives", which explains how animal products have had a significant negative impact on our health. Since then, I just can't bring myself to drink it anymore. Research is showing that animal milk is not as good for us as once believed and that it may be linked to serious diseases and health issues. I have decided I don't need that. Some people do not agree, which is totally okay too. If so, you can use regular milk in your smoothies. You can also use rice milk, soy milk, coconut milk, and other mil substitutes. I have just found that I like almond milk the best. :) I hope that answers your question! :)

    2. I read on another blog that dairy does not combine well with fruit and will cause fermentation, yeast, digestive issues, and will not aid in weight loss. Not sure how true that is, but that's what I read. =)

      Delete
    3. Hi, Jennifer. I am pretty sure that is not true for most people. I did a little research and asked two nutritionist friends of mine who both disagreed. You can always leave out the milk and use plain water or coconut water if you prefer though! =)

      Delete
    4. Also Jennifer, I do not use dairy, I am mostly vegan. The "milk" used in my smoothies is made from nuts, soy, or coconut, so it would not apply to these. =)

  11. I make smoothies every morning. How interesting to put the whole strawberry (leaves included) in the blender. I never thought about eating them, I always go through the trouble of chopping the tops off. I will stop putting so much time into my strawberry leaves :)

  15. We combine spinach , kale, beets, celery, plum, kiwi, green apple , frozen tropical fruit, mixed berries, sometimes carrots, and half of a banana. We use water. Sometimes in the beginning to train your dead taste buds it's nice to use a small packet of stevia, or agava surip to sweeten it , then eventually it tasts great without it!! And protein powder the sun warrior raw..

    2. I am going to have to try this. This morning I thought I would start to be more healthy so I made myself a kale, spinach, strawberry, cucumber and carrot smoothie with yogurt (plain) and flaxseed. Can you say HOLY KALE!!! I had to literally CHOCK that stuff down. I had a large glass and it took me an hour to drink only 6 ounces before I decided to put the rest in the fridge for later.

I am determined to drink at least 1 veggie smoothie a day so any help I can get, I will definitely try!

    1. Hi, Tina! I know the VitaMix is expensive ... believe me. I questioned for over a year whether or not I should get one! Now that I have one, I do not know what I would do without it. I use it for so much more than smoothies ... soups, dips, sauces, ice cream, chopping, milk, bread ... I could go on and on! That being said, I totally understand if you are not ready or not in a place to buy one right now. You can make these smoothies in a regular blender, but they will not be as smooth. That may mean that you need to use less greens and chop your fruit and veggies ahead of time. You will also need to use ground flaxseed. It may help to use a little more non-dairy milk or yogurt (if you are not vegan) to help the ingredients blend. I hope that helps!

    2. When vitamix is doing a show at costco, that is the best price I have seen them for. If you don't have a membership ask a friend or family that has one.

      Delete
    3. Good tip, Herbmom! I am actually a VitaMix affiliate now, which means that I could technically be one of those people doing the shows in Costco. That is not my thing, though. I only became an affiliate because I truly love and endorse their product wholeheartedly and know how it has personally changed my life. I find myself sharing that with others and talking about my VitaMix all the time, so it was only natural for me to go ahead and become an affiliate. I tell you this because the price for the VitaMix when you buy it directly through VitaMix (which is what you are doing when you buy it through this site), is the same price as it would be at Costco. You also get free shipping (worth $25), so it shows up right at your door! Awesome value! I love when people buy one through me, but truthfully, I really just want people to have them. So, buy them wherever you can find the best deal and enjoy!!! :)

    4. I have a ninja, and I love it! My sister owns the VitaMix and I don't see a major different from my Ninja, and now they are around $40. or get the more powerful for around $100. I don't think you will be disappointed.

    5. You don't need an expensive blender. I've been making smoothies for two years - exact same recipes you see here - with a cheap Wal Mart under-$20 blender. Works fine. Do NOT spend a fortune on a blender.

  18. Hi I am a spinach smoothie fan as well, I make mine in a regular Sunbeam blender, start with whole wheat old fashioned oats add some protein powder,(love Jillian Michaels) then about a tsp of cinnamon,(great for sooo many things, throw in any unsweetened frozen fruit, gobs of fresh spinach, lowfat vanilla yogurt, then some unsweetened almond milk, (has 50% more calcium than milk) then end with some herbal tea, (any flavor) I use Yerba Mate, this makes enough for 2 smoothies (breakfast and lunch, I dont do any prepping and the blender gets it good and smooth. the protein powder will keep you full longer I can make this for right around 350 calories and less than 5 grams of fat. Enjoy!

  19. I'm very excited to try this recipe! My youngest son (11) is a very picky eater. I struggle with it since my older two boys will eat anything! I am always looking for ways to sneak veggies in his food. (He's been eating baby food carrots and squash in his spaghetti sauce and tacos for years!!!) I'm going to try this over the weekend.

  22. Just made this for my 17-yr-old son and myself... You TRULY cannot taste the spinach, so I will be making these regularly for him. (He's not a veggie lover like his sis!)
Though I appreciate your vegan-ness, I make my own yogurt, so will continue to use it. Have you tried beets or carrots in this recipe? I think I will do that this week. Such an easy way to sneak in a little nutrition!
    Thanks!

    1. So glad you like them! Yogurt is great too. I am going vegan-ish for awhile, but I am not ruling anything out yet. :) I haven't tried beets because they are the one food I cannot stand. That being said, I think that they would be a great addition if you like them. Lots of people who love beets enjoy them in their smoothies. I haven't tried carrots yet, but I think I will add them to my list. What have you tried and liked? Thanks for being here!

    1. I normally buy the fruit frozen unless I can get a really good deal on fresh fruit. If I use fresh, I usually freeze it for at least 24 hours. You do not have to use frozen fruit though if you prefer fresh. You can just add ice to get your smoothie to the consistency you like. Hope that helps!

  24. Very similar to the one my husband and I use! Although, since we never freeze our fruits, we use ice to make up for the lack of cold etc. They don't have to be frozen :)

  25. Hi! I also found this recipe via Pinterest. I have been making a "green" smoothie for awhile now, but had never thought about using milk/milk substitute in it. I had used out regular blender for awhile and finally decided to take the plunge and get the vitamix! Doesn't take me half as long and is just amazing! My new favorite kitchen appliance! I also use unsweetened coconut milk and it's really good!! Also spinach blended up is pretty tasteless so those who don't like to eat it this is a good way to put it in your diet because you can't even tell! Can't wait to get some new ideas of recipes!!

  38. This looks great! One thing if you are trying to get your iron to absorb properly from the spinach omit the yogurt or calcium enriched milk. Calcium blocks the iron from absorbing. (They cannot be taken within two hours of each other.) You could use orange juice to help the iron from the spinach absorb. :)
